Son Goku is the main protagonist of the manga Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Super, and their animated adaptations, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z / Dragon Ball Kai, then Dragon Ball Super, as well as the alternative animated sequel of the first two series, Dragon Ball GT.

An orphan exiled from the defunct planet Vegeta, he lands on Earth where he grows up with his adoptive grandfather. His adventure begins the day he meets Bulma, a young adventurer, who invites him to search for the Dragon Balls.

His name, Son Goku, is directly taken from the Japanese transcription of Sun Wukong, the hero of the classic novel of Chinese literature, The Journey to the West, dating from the 16th century, which is very popular in Japan. Akira Toriyama keeps several elements of it, such as Nyoi-bô, the monkey tail, or Kinto-Un. It means in Chinese "Grandson of the monkey(s) of the heavens".

His Saiyan name is Kakarotto, a derivative of carrot which means "carrot" in English. Like all other Saiyans, he has a name that refers to a vegetable.
